An Email interview was done with Mr. Rhinehart by a friend of one of his blackbelts and this was his response:
What made me get into martial arts in the beginning? I had always wanted to study karate! I was always small and always trying to defend my smallness. When I got married and had a child, I felt that I couldn’t defend them, if the time came to. The answer was to learn to be a better fighter and in turn be a better protector of my family. Martial arts was a great tool to do so.
I became an instructor by accident. I met someone that wanted me to teach him the secrets of karate! Of course there are no secrets, just hard work. My teacher, Mr. Martinez, wanted me to teach, in order to learn the art better. By teaching, you understand what you are teaching in a more complete way.
The only lows to teaching is when a student uses what you have shared with them in the wrong way. The martial arts is a way of life and it should not be abused! The highs are sharing a passion of the martial arts with everyone that is interested in bettering themselves. To be able to work with someone that has little self-worth and watch them grow in their eyes. To see someone that has always been bullied, be able to stand up for themselves. To see them have the self worth to walk away from a fight and still feel good about themselves. To train better fighters and have them become better citizens. Mostly high points, very few lows over a 35 year period.
My day job is Sleep Apnea consulting and therapy. I have owned my own restaurant as well. The teaching and practicing of martial arts is a passion first and a wonderful way to share with others, something that I love very much! For the period of 35 years, the martial arts has guided me through my life with the concepts that it teaches us. I only hope that those concepts and way of life, I’ve been able to share with my students.
